Careers

Good work. Good people. Four days a week.

What we believe in

At Hamer Way Architects, we are building a studio where people can do thoughtful, ambitious work, take real responsibility and develop their careers - whilst still having time and energy for life outside the office.

That means a genuine four-day working week, sensible working hours and a culture built around trust, collaboration and doing good work well.

We’re a small practice, so you won’t disappear into a large team or work on one tiny part of a project for months at a time. You’ll be involved across projects, working closely with clients, consultants and the wider design team, and seeing how ideas develop from the first sketch through to delivery.

Who we’re looking for

More than anything, we’re looking for thoughtful, capable people who care about architecture, enjoy working collaboratively and want to play an active part in a small studio.

We’re especially interested in people who are looking for more than just their next job - people who want to contribute, take ownership and be part of the practice as it grows over the coming years.

We believe in giving people trust and responsibility, and we value the commitment, good judgement and high standards that come with that.

We’re looking for people who are dependable, proactive and comfortable getting involved - whether that means developing a design, speaking with a client, coordinating a consultant or helping move a project forward.

Your experience will naturally look different depending on which role you’re applying for, so we’re not looking for identical CVs or a long checklist of skills required or boxes to tick.

What we do

Our work is primarily residential, with a strong focus on private homes, renovation, extension, retrofit and heritage projects, alongside selected small commercial and other design-led work.

Experience in the residential sector is essential, as is a good understanding of how projects move through design, planning, technical development and construction.

We work mainly in AutoCAD, with SketchUp used regularly as a design tool. Rendering and visualisation skills are useful, but not essential.

What we offer

The chance to help shape a growing practice, not just work within one.

A studio in historic Macclesfield, two minutes from the train station and around 20 minutes by train from central Manchester, with the Peak District and Macclesfield Forest close by.

  • A genuine four-day working week.

  • A salary appropriate to your level of experience.

  • Annual leave plus your birthday off.

  • No culture of routine unpaid overtime.

  • Support and mentoring, including Part 3 support where relevant.

  • The opportunity to work closely with clients and take meaningful responsibility for projects.

  • A small studio where your contribution genuinely matters.

If you’re a Part 2 Architectural Assistant, newly qualified Architect, or Architect with at least 5 years’ post-qualification experience, we’d love to hear from you.

Send us your CV, a concise portfolio and a few lines telling us why you’d like to join Hamer Way.
