Gas Works
This historic 1870 residence has been extended with a carefully considered contemporary addition that celebrates its heritage while introducing a new architectural layer. The pitched kitchen-diner is clad in sleek black timber and elevated on a reinforced concrete plinth, creating a subtle, tactile contrast to the original brickwork and emphasising the distinctiveness of the new intervention. A glazed link connects the existing house to the extension, flooding interiors with natural light and reinforcing a strong visual connection to the garden.
Materials and detailing are carefully resolved: insulated render for the main house and rear extension ensures improved thermal performance, while tiled roofs and dark aluminium-framed Crittall-style windows respect both the industrial influences of the house and its historic proportions. This approach makes the new elements legible and contemporary without competing with the original building, creating a home that is at once heritage-led, functional, and experiential—balancing family life, garden interaction, and architectural presence.
